Frequently asked question · Measure AI Traffic
Why can’t we see AI Overviews or AI Mode in our referrer data?
Because Google sends them as google.com. A click from an AI Overview, an AI Mode answer, or a blue link all arrive with the same referrer, and neither Google Analytics nor Search Console labels which surface the click came from. No tool can separate them from referrer data, whatever its pitch says. What you can see is the effect: impressions holding while clicks fall on the queries that show an Overview. For those surfaces the answer record is the measurement. We run the prompts on Google AI Mode daily and report whether you are named and cited there.
What the referrer carries
A referrer is the address of the page a click came from, and for every Google surface that address is google.com. An AI Overview at the top of the results, an AI Mode answer, and the third blue link all send exactly the same string. Google Analytics files them all as google organic, and Search Console counts impressions and clicks for the query without saying which part of the page the click landed on. There is no field in either tool that records the surface, so there is nothing for a vendor to parse. A tool that claims to split AI Overview traffic out of your referrer data is estimating, and it should say how.
What you can see instead
The effect shows up as a shape rather than a label. On the queries that trigger an Overview, impressions hold or grow while clicks fall, because the answer above the results took the click. One study on this page measured organic click-through on such queries dropping from 1.76% to 0.61% over fifteen months, and none of that loss carries an AI label in anyone's analytics. Your head terms sit where they sat last year and the organic line slides anyway. That pattern in Search Console is the closest thing to a referrer these surfaces will give you.
Why we measure the answer
For these surfaces the answer record is the measurement. Your buyers' questions run on Google AI Mode once a day alongside the other engines, and every answer is kept with the sources it cited and the brands it named. The report says whether you are named there, whether a page of yours is cited, and how early, against the competitors you track. That does not tell you how many people saw the answer, and nobody can. It tells you what they saw.
