Frequently asked question · Measure AI Traffic
What do we set up in our analytics, and who does it?
A channel for AI assistant referrers: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, and the rest, defined as a channel grouping or a segment so it appears in the reports your team already opens, with landing pages and conversions attached. On Managed GEO we do it with whoever holds your analytics access. On consulting we specify it and your analytics owner ships it, a small job in most setups. Either way the row is yours, in your account, and it keeps working if we are no longer in the picture.
The channel definition
The setup is one definition in the analytics you already run, not a new tool. In GA4 it is a custom channel grouping or a segment whose rule matches the referrers of the AI assistants: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, and the rest. If you run something other than GA4, the same idea applies: a channel or segment keyed on those referrers. Once the channel exists, the standard reports do the rest: landing pages show which of your pages the assistants send people to, and the conversions you already track show what those people did.
Who ships it
On Managed GEO we do it ourselves, with whoever holds your analytics access, and you review the row on the first monthly call. On GEO Consulting and Trends we write the specification, referrer list and rule included, and your analytics owner ships it. In most setups that is a small job for someone who already knows the property. Either way the definition lives in your account, under your login, and keeps working if we are no longer around.
What the row can and cannot show
The channel counts the visits that arrive with an AI referrer. It undercounts by the design of the web, not ours: referrers get stripped in some cases, some assistants open links without one, and a click from a Google AI Overview or AI Mode arrives as google.com organic, where no rule can pick it out. The report states that beside the number. It is still the row where a small channel that converts stops disappearing into referral, and the row we read every month next to the answer data.

Measure both halves of AI traffic: AI assistant referrals as a channel in your analytics, beside daily mention, citation, and share-of-voice data per engine.
