Frequently asked question · Measure AI Traffic
AI referrals are under 1% of our sessions. Why measure them at all?
The sessions are the small half. Most AI answers never send a click, and the ones that do are undercounted, so the referral row understates AI’s effect on demand by a wide margin. It is still worth a row: on the published studies those visits convert well above organic, and a small channel that converts is easy to lose in a bucket called referral. The larger measurement is the answer record, which does not need a click to happen. Put both in the report, say which is which, and the under-1% figure stops being the whole story.
Why the row is small
The row is small for two reasons, and only one of them is that AI sends few clicks. The other is that the clicks it does send are undercounted: referrers get stripped, some assistants open links without one, and anything from a Google AI Overview or AI Mode arrives as google.com organic. So the under-1% figure is a floor. It also fits the wider picture on this page: 68% of Google searches now end without a click, and AI tools send less than 1% of all outbound traffic. The click is not where AI's effect shows up.
Why it still gets its own row
The published studies point the same way. In one on this page, 0.5% of a company's visits, the ones referred by AI search, produced 12.1% of its signups over thirty days. A channel that small and that valuable is easy to lose in a bucket called referral, and a channel grouping is the only thing that gives it a line of its own, with landing pages and conversions attached. Setting that up is a small job, and once it exists you can watch from your own account whether it grows.
Where the larger number is
Most AI answers never send a click at all, and the ones that name you, cite you, or recommend a competitor shape the decision anyway. That is the half the referral row cannot see, and it is measured by asking the engines directly. Your buyers' questions run once a day on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Mode, and the platform keeps every answer with the brands it named and the pages it cited. Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, and position come from that record, and none of them needs a click to happen. The report carries both halves, labelled.
