Frequently asked question · PR & Comms
Can we get an old story out of the answers?
Not by asking. An engine cites what it trusts, and a story stays in the answers as long as the sources carrying it are the strongest ones available. What works is giving the engines something better to cite: a newsroom page that addresses it directly, newer coverage, and answered threads. We track which sources still carry the old story and whether the new ones are replacing them. Expect months, not days.
Why the story is still there
An engine does not keep an old story out of loyalty to it. It keeps citing the coverage from week one because, for the question being asked, those pages are still the strongest sources it can find. The correction ran, but it ran in an outlet the engines do not read, or as a paragraph inside a piece that still leads with the crisis. Your own newsroom may say nothing about it at all, so the only pages that address the subject directly are the ones you want gone.
There is no request form for this. The engines cite what they trust, and trust is earned by pages, not asked for.
What replaces it
The work is to give the engines something better to cite for the same question, then wait for them to prefer it. In practice that means three kinds of source:
- A newsroom page that addresses the story directly, in plain terms, so the engines have an owned source to quote instead of a third-party one
- Newer coverage in outlets the engines already cite in your category, which is where the briefing's placement targets come from
- Answered threads, because a Reddit thread that has been asking about you for months carries the old story until someone replies
Your team and your agency execute these with the relationships and writers you already have. We measure whether they land.
How we track the replacement
Old coverage that is still being cited stays flagged in your report until the answer moves. Each period, the movers tables show whether the pages carrying the old story are losing share and whether the new ones are gaining it, per engine and per question. Expect this to take months, since it depends on the engines recrawling and reweighing sources on their own schedule.
