Frequently asked question · Fix What AI Says
Why does the engine keep quoting our old price after we updated the page?
Usually because the answer was never built from the page you updated. The engine cited an old URL that still resolves, or a directory listing, or a comparison page somebody else wrote, and that source still says the old number. Sometimes the model is not looking anything up and is answering from what it memorised in training, which only changes when the model is retrained. The cited-sources table for the prompt shows which of these you have. An old URL of yours gets a redirect and a rewrite, a listing gets a request, and the rest gets a new page that answers the question better than the stale one.
The answer and the page are not the same thing
An AI answer is assembled from the pages the engine retrieved for that prompt, and there is no guarantee your current pricing page was one of them. The cited-pages table for the prompt shows which URLs the engine leaned on, and the usual finding is one of these:
- A pricing page of yours from two years ago that still resolves, which the engine reads as happily as the new one
- A listing on a directory or review site, entered by someone else and never touched since
- A competitor's comparison page, tidy and direct, that lists your price as it was in 2024
- No live source at all, because the model answered from what it memorised in training
Each source in the table is marked as yours, a competitor's, or somebody else's, and that tag tells you who can fix it and how hard that will be.
The fix for each case
Your own stale URL is the easy case: it gets a redirect to the current page and a rewrite that states the price plainly enough to be quoted, with llms.txt and the structured data saying the same thing. A directory listing gets a correction request with the facts and a page of yours that states them. A competitor's page is not going to change, so a page of yours goes up that answers the exact question better than theirs, drafted by a content routine and approved by a person before it is published.
The memorised case has no page to fix. It changes when the model is retrained, and we tell you when that is what you are looking at rather than a crawl problem.
How you will know it worked
The prompt that surfaced the old price keeps running every day on every engine and in every country you track. The accuracy log records the day the wording changed on each one, so a price that Perplexity has dropped and Copilot still quotes shows up as exactly that.
