Frequently asked question · Competitor Research
Can you see competitors I did not list?
Not by name. Detection matches the aliases and owned domains of the brands in your list, so a brand the platform was never told about is not counted. The closest signal is the Third-party tag on cited domains and business profiles, which marks a source that is neither yours nor a tracked competitor. When one keeps appearing, we add it as a competitor and re-scan every past answer.
Why detection is deliberately narrow
Detection is plain text matching against a list. For each brand in the workspace it looks for the name variants at word boundaries in the answer text and the owned domains among the citation hosts. A brand that is not on the list has no aliases and no domains to match, so its mentions pass through unread, and no model is asked to guess which other companies an answer might be recommending.
That narrowness is what keeps the numbers trustworthy. Share of voice is zero-sum across the tracked set, and a brand appearing and disappearing from that set because a model spotted it one day and not the next would make every share figure move for reasons that have nothing to do with the answers.
What the Third-party tag shows instead
Every cited page and domain is tagged You, the competitor that owns it, or Third-party. The first two show whose sites the engines lean on. Third-party marks everything else: review sites, communities, publications, and any vendor you have not listed. A Third-party domain that keeps climbing the cited list for your prompts is the nearest thing to a competitor you did not know about, and the reports flag it as a rival worth tracking.
What happens when we add one
Adding a competitor is a name, its aliases, and its websites. Once it is in the list, detection re-runs across every answer already collected, so you see its share and position over the whole history rather than from the day it was added. That re-scan runs on a queue and is not instant.
